Madhur Jain

From soldering irons to distributed systems.

I've been building things since before it was my job: two startups, dozens of side projects, and plenty of ideas that didn't work out. By day, I'm a software engineer at Google, working on YouTube Ads infrastructure. By night, I'm combining hardware, software and AI:

Code review, but for buildings

Software gets checked automatically on every commit; the electrical drawings for a hospital still get checked by hand, page by page. I'm building AI that reads 100+ electrical drawings, finds every breaker, feeder and transformer, and checks them against the NEC before anything gets built.

Robots that work on day one

Robots don't have to be perfect to be useful. I'm building low-latency vision and teleoperation so a remote human can step in when a robot gets stuck, and every save teaches it to need less help.

Where I've been

2022 - now

Google · Ad infrastructure & privacy

Building identity, personalization and compliance systems across AdMob and YouTube Ads: millions of QPS, billions of dollars, and regulators, lawyers and advertisers who all need to stay happy at the same time.

2020 - 2022

Amazon AWS · IoT & video

Founding engineer on AWS IoT TwinMaker, a greenfield AWS service taken from blank page to launch. Designed and built its video pipeline, streaming live and recorded camera feeds from industrial sites into 3D digital twins. Launched at re:Invent 2021.

2017 - 2020

SanDisk · SSD firmware & systems

Brought up the custom NVMe storage inside the Xbox Series X|S with Microsoft, chased boot-critical bugs down to the PCIe bus, and squeezed SSD power down so laptops last longer.

Those shorter Xbox load screens? You're welcome.

2012 - 2015

Pleximus · Co-Founder

Bootstrapped a 10-person company that built its own products and took on client work. Grew an industrial control product from zero to $100k ARR, and built a platform for tracking people and vehicle fleets in real time (think the live map behind Uber or DoorDash).

Learned that the hardest protocol is the invoice.

2008 - 2012

Infosys → a startup → eNTesla · The origin story

Started at Infosys, then left to co-found FreeMyCall.com: free calls anywhere in the world, paid for by watching ads. Then my childhood love for electronics landed me at eNTesla, an embedded startup, where I designed a medical audiometer (a hearing-test device) from schematic to PCB to firmware.

Lesson learned: hardware is hard.

Blast from the past

Before the servers, there were soldering irons.

More on GitHub, including gopee (a self-hosted proxy with 335★) - 59 repos and counting, some of them even finished.

School

2015 - 2016

M.S. Computer Engineering, New Jersey Institute of Technology - a fresh start in a new country, with the same itch to build.

2004 - 2008

B.E. Electronics, Mumbai University - where I learned chips run on magic smoke, and you must never let it out.
